Rep. Jackson-Lee, Mr. Smith and others paid tribute to African-American veterans of the Civil War during the annual ceremony of the Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Memorial Service
In a celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, several civil rights leaders spoke about Dr. King and achieving his dream. Rev. Green delivered the keynote address. A theatrical poetry reading was performed by The New Voice. The Howard University Gospel Choir and the Harmony Choir from Japan sang gospel songs. Members of the DC Youth Ensemble did a reading and a dance.
African-American Civil War Memorial Ceremony
Participants honored African-American veterans for their service to the nation. The ceremony included traditional African dancing, historic reenactments, songs and speeches.
